Protograms are the historiated initials,
enlarged letters at the beginning
of a paragraph or other section of text,
that contain a picture.
In Byzantion, the initials were usually formed
by animals and identifiable figures.
Red colour ink -an extremely expensive colour- was used
in the imperial bibliographic laboratories for valuable manuscripts.
