The scientific Latin term octopus
was derived from Ancient Greek oκτώπους,
a compound form of
οκτώ (okτο, “eight”) and πούς (pous, “foot”).
The Octopus motif has appeared
in several Ancient Greek Ceramics through times,
but this particular design is inspired
by a silver tetradrachm of Eretria, 511-490 BC.
