The peacock is the sacred bird of Hera, the queen of the Greek gods.
Hera chose Argus Panoptes, a giant with one hundred eyes,
to watch over Io (a mortal loved by Zeus).
Zeus sent Hermes to trick and kill Argus to free Io.
To honor her loyal servant, Hera took the one hundred eyes of Argus
and placed them upon the tail feathers of the peacock.
